I drove up to the Holter Dam tailwater yesterday. I fished it ~ 20 yrs ago, and had fond memories of dense evening caddis action with uncountable slurping trout, and morning trico hatches as well. I checked with one of the fly shops in Craig, and they basically warned me that last week’s unsettled weather had disrupted the fishing. Unfortunately, truer words were never spoken.
I caught a few fish subsurface, but the evening caddis hatch never materialized, and only a sporadic fish was seen to hit the surface. The trico hatch was a bit more robust, but the trout didn’t seem to notice.
Probably need a few weeks of stable, sunny weather before anything changes.
