I fished the upper Tye yesterday, well above the stocked sections, with John Fielding. It was a clear day in the upper 60’s, and we hit the water late morning. The stream there is high gradient, with deep plunge pools of small to medium size. It took a lot of rock climbing to access them, but it was worth it! Most pools yielded several wild, brightly colored brookies, frequently in the 8-9 inch range, with heavy bodies. They most often came to a nymph, #16 copper John’s, but there was an occasional dry fly hit, to a #14 tan caddis. The biggest fish were all caught on the nymphs. The mountain streams are in great shape, and the upper Tye is a good stretch of water for native brook trout!
